The strongest will quickly becomes weaker when a lighter, tobacco or ashtray is within easy reach. Design your environment so that smoking isn't the easiest next step.
Willpower becomes easier when the environment supports you.
Make these decisions in a calm moment, not when the urge is strong: throw it away, give it away, or keep it out of reach. Every additional hurdle creates distance between impulse and action.
Why distance is stronger than willpower
Smoking paraphernalia is a strong trigger. The brain recognizes them and automatically recalls the entire habit chain. When these stimuli are not visible or tangible, a brief moment of interruption occurs. This distance is often enough to initiate an alternative action.
Make smoking harder
Remove everything from your environment that automatically makes you reach for a cigarette and consciously make the next step more difficult.
